Placement
A placement is one of the places an ad can be shown: Facebook Feed, Instagram Stories, Instagram Reels, Facebook in-stream video, Marketplace and so on. Each one has its own recommended shape, file limits, text lengths and interface on top of the ad. That is why an ad made for one placement often looks wrong in another, and why Meta lets you tailor creative per placement.
How does Meta define a placement?
Meta's help page on choosing placements opens with the definition:
The places where you can run your ads are called ad placements. Depending on the ad objective you choose when you create your campaign, your ads can appear on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads and Meta Audience Network.
It adds: "Available placements are determined by your ad type and settings. Not all placements are available for every ad."
What are Advantage+ placements?
The setting that lets Meta choose. Meta's page About Advantage+ placements says they "help you find the most cost-effective opportunities across Meta technologies and placements", and reports: "In an experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action (CPA) on average compared to ad sets using manual placement settings." The page gives no date or method for the experiment.
Meta's placement best practices recommend "remaining opted into all placements", so the delivery system can "allocate your budget across multiple placements based on where they're likely to perform best."
What happens when you exclude a placement?
Not always a full exclusion. Meta's limited spend page says that when you exclude one during campaign creation, "we'll aim to spend around 5% of your budget on each excluded placement, if it's likely to improve performance." It applies to the sales, leads, traffic, engagement and app promotion objectives, eligible advertisers are opted in by default, and you can switch it off per placement under "Manage excluded placements".
Why does each placement need its own creative?
Because the frames differ. Meta's ads guide recommends:
| Placement | Shape | Spec page |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Feed | 4:5 | image, video |
| Instagram Feed | 4:5 image, 9:16 video | image, video |
| Stories and Reels | 9:16 | Instagram Reels, Facebook Stories |
| Carousel in feed | 1:1, or 4:5 on Instagram | Facebook, Instagram |
The vertical placements also put the interface over the ad, so they carry a safe zone. Meta's page on asset customization for placements makes the same point from the other side: "use a vertical aspect ratio for ads in stories. That way, your image or video covers the whole mobile screen and grabs peoples' full attention." The same page suggests different text per placement: "Instagram Stories work well with short copy."
What it means for your ads
- Leaving placements on means your ad will run in shapes you didn't design. If you only upload a square, Meta fills the other aspect ratios itself.
- Supply the shapes yourself. A 4:5 and a 9:16 cover feed, Stories and Reels.
- Write to the placement. Reels primary text is 44 characters in Meta's guide; Facebook Feed recommends 50 to 150.
- Check each placement's preview before publishing. It shows the interface on top of the ad, which the exported file doesn't.
Common mistakes
- Excluding a placement and expecting zero spend there. Limited spend may still put around 5% of the budget on it.
- Cropping one master into every placement. It keeps the pixels and loses the layout, as the resizing post shows.

Terrads makes each placement you pick at its own size, composed for its frame, so feed, Stories and Reels each get an ad built for them.
