Ad creative
Ad creative is the part of an ad people actually see and hear: the image or video, the words on it, the primary text and headline around it, and the call-to-action button. Targeting, budget and bidding decide who sees an ad and when; the creative decides whether they stop and act. Advertisers often shorten it to "creative", as in "testing new creative".
How does Meta define ad creative?
Meta's page on campaigns, ad sets and ads places it in the three-level structure every ad has:
| Level | What you set there |
|---|---|
| Campaign | the advertising objective |
| Ad set | audience, budget, schedule and placements |
| Ad | "the creative that people see, such as images or videos" |
At the ad level, it says, "you choose your ad creative, which may include images, videos, text and a call-to-action button." Meta's Marketing API reference defines it in one line: "Format which provides layout and contains content for the ad."
What formats can ad creative take?
Meta's ads guide sorts it into image, video, carousel and collection. An image ad uses "a single photo and an optional footer", in Meta's image ads page, and is what advertisers usually call a static ad. A carousel ad holds several images or videos, each card with its own link.
Each format then comes in a shape per placement. One ad can need a 4:5 and a 9:16 version of the same idea, because an aspect ratio that fills the feed doesn't fill Stories.
What does Meta say makes ad creative work?
Its image ad best practices include: "Use the recommended aspect ratio for each ad placement", "Show your brand or logo", "Show people using your product or service", and keep any text overlay from obstructing the visuals, in "a modern, clean font in a large enough type size and a contrasting hue."
On volume, Meta's creative diversification guidance recommends "at least 20 diversified ads in Advantage+ shopping campaigns". Its companion page defines diversified as "a wide range of ad creatives with different themes, messages, and visuals". Meta's creative-volume number covers what that recommendation does and doesn't say.
What it means for your ads
- Change the creative when results fall, not only the targeting. Meta's creative fatigue status is about the image or video, counted across campaigns.
- Vary the idea, not the crop. Our reading: twenty recolors of one layout aren't "diversified" in Meta's sense, which means "different themes, messages, and visuals".
- Make each placement's version on purpose. Meta's guidance starts with the recommended ratio per placement.
- Measure video creative on its opening. Hook rate shows whether the first 3 seconds stopped the scroll.
Common mistakes
- Counting variants as new creative. A new headline on the same image is still the same picture to the people who have seen it.
- Judging creative in its first days. Meta's troubleshooting page says to first "ensure that the ad set has exited the learning phase".
