Flexible ads
Flexible ads use Meta's flexible ad format: you give one ad up to 10 images and videos, and Meta's delivery system decides what to show each person, a single image, a video or a carousel, based on the placement and audience. It is chosen at the ad level, only on some objectives, and is often confused with dynamic creative, an older feature that mixes headlines and images into variations instead.
How does Meta define the flexible ad format?
From Meta's About the flexible ad format:
When you select Flexible as your ad format, you can select up to 10 images and videos in a single ad campaign, and the ad delivery system will automatically determine what media or media combination, such as single image, video or carousel, to show to people.
Meta lists three benefits: automatic format choice, less setup ("You also don't need to create more ads per ad set to test different formats"), and grouping media with different text, which can "help prevent ad fatigue".
Why can't I see Flexible in Ads Manager?
The page opens with "This feature may not be available to you", then gives two gates. Flexible appears "if you create the campaign with the traffic, engagement, sales and app promotion ad objectives", and three of those need a specific conversion location:
| Objective | Conversion location Meta requires |
|---|---|
| Traffic | Website |
| Engagement | Website or Message destinations |
| Sales | Website, App or Message destinations |
| App promotion | None stated |
And the fix most people miss: "If you don't see Flexible in the Ad setup section, click More options to select it."
Is flexible the same as dynamic creative?
No, though Meta points from one to the other. Its dynamic creative page says that "As of June 2024, you may no longer be able to use dynamic creative" on sales or app promotion, and that "using flexible ad format to achieve a similar result is recommended". Similar, not the same:
| Flexible format | Dynamic creative | |
|---|---|---|
| What you upload | "up to 10 images and videos" | "multiple creative elements, like images and headlines" |
| What Meta does | Picks the media and format per person | Combines elements "to generate different ad variations" |
| Where you set it | At the ad level, in Ad setup | When creating the ad set |
| Known limits | Four objectives, conversion locations | Not with "ads in multiple languages", asset customization or political ads; a maximum of 1,000 dynamic creative ads |
Meta also warns that dynamic creative reports "the aggregate performance across all variations", so it is not a substitute for a split test. Advantage+ creative also lists an enhancement named Flex media.
What it means for your ads
- Give it genuinely different media. The format can only choose among what you upload. Ten crops of one photo give it one real option.
- Upload media that fits each placement. Meta delivers flexible ads "depending on the aspect ratio of the media you uploaded".
- Test formats and concepts separately. Flexible decides the format for you, and like dynamic creative it doesn't tell you which single version won.
Common mistakes
- Reporting it as removed. "May not be available to you" is a per-account, per-objective condition, not a shutdown.
- Expecting fatigue warnings. Meta's creative fatigue status is only for ad sets with one creative, so an ad carrying ten images and videos may never show it.
