Creative testing
Creative testing is the practice of running new ad images, videos or copy side by side to learn which performs best, then keeping the winners. Meta also has a feature by that name: a creative test in Ads Manager copies an existing ad into 2 to 7 test versions inside a running campaign, gives them a share of the budget, and reports the top performers.
What is Meta's creative test?
Meta's setup page:
Creative testing can help you optimize your ad creative and inform best practices. In a creative test, you can compare up to 7 creative variants with delivery provided to new test ads.
The selling point is that it runs where your ads already are. "The test is set up in an existing campaign so that high-performing ads can continue to run after the test with delivery system learnings retained. There’s no need to merge them into another campaign where the learnings would reset."
How do you set up a creative test in Meta Ads Manager?
The conditions, from Meta's steps:
| Setting | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| Bid strategy | "Creative testing is supported in campaigns using the Highest volume bid strategy only." |
| Where | "Go to the ad level and scroll down to the Creative test section." |
| Number of test ads | "You can create 2 to 7 copies", then change the creative of each |
| Budget | "We suggest using no more than 20% of your existing budget" |
| Duration and metric | You set both; the schedule "only determines when results are measured" |
At the end, Meta emails "results identifying high performers if any were found". Results also appear in Experiments.
How is a creative test different from an A/B test?
| Creative test | A/B test | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs in | Your existing campaign | Separate test campaigns or ad sets |
| Versions | 2 to 7 test ads | Up to 5, per Meta's Experiments page |
| Audience | Not described as split | "random, non-overlapping groups" |
| Result | Top performers on your chosen metric; "A confidence level is not included" | A winner on cost per result "with a certain confidence percentage", per Meta's winner page |
Use a creative test to try new creative without disturbing a campaign. Use an A/B test when you need a statistically separated answer.
What does Meta recommend about how much to test?
Meta's creative diversification guidance from November 2024 recommends "dedicating 20-30% of your overall ad budget towards testing new ads", alongside "at least 20 diversified ads in Advantage+ shopping campaigns". That is a different page and a different figure from the creative test's 20% budget suggestion. The creative-volume post covers what Meta does and doesn't publish about volume.
What it means for your ads
- Make the variants genuinely different. Meta's definition of diversified creative is "different themes, messages, and visuals". Seven crops of one photo test the crop.
- Pick the metric before you start. The test reports against the comparison metric you choose.
- Turn off the losers yourself. "The test does not make any automatic changes based on the results", so test ads run until you stop them or the ad set ends.
- Test before fatigue forces it. New creative is Meta's first fix for creative fatigue.
Common mistakes
- Reading the result as a significance test. Meta says outright that no confidence level is included.
- Expecting the test schedule to stop the ads. Test ads "start running on their ad set schedule when you publish them, even if you adjust the test schedule."
