Meta's safe zones are percentages, which is why every guide's pixel numbers disagree
Stories and Reels safe zones are stated as 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides. Guides republish them as fixed pixel counts, and no two agree — because a percentage only becomes a pixel at one canvas size.
On a 9:16 Stories or Reels ad, keep text and logos out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side. At 1080 × 1920 that is 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom and 65 px per side; at 1440 × 2560 it is 358, 896 and 86 px.
Look up the safe zones for Instagram Stories and Reels and you will get pixel numbers. 250 px at the bottom. 150 px at the top. Somebody says 160. Another guide gives you a range, "pixels 250 to 1248", as though it were a measured fact.
They disagree with each other, and all of them disagree with Meta, because Meta does not publish a pixel number. It publishes percentages: leave roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side clear of text, logos and anything else that matters.
A percentage is not a pixel until you fix the canvas. And the canvas is the thing that keeps changing.
How many pixels is the Stories and Reels safe zone?
35% of a 1920-tall frame is 672 px. 35% of a 2560-tall frame — the resolution Meta's guide actually specifies for Reels — is 896 px. Same rule, same creative, 224 px of difference.
Here is the whole rule converted for both canvases. Each figure is Meta's percentage multiplied by the frame's height (top, bottom) or width (sides), rounded to the nearest pixel:

So when a guide tells you "keep the bottom 250 px clear", it is not merely imprecise. It is confidently wrong by a factor of three at the resolution Meta asks you to master at. Someone measured a screenshot at one size, wrote the result down as a constant, and everybody else inherited the constant without the screenshot.
This is what a percentage-shaped rule does to a pixel-shaped summary. The summary is correct exactly once, at the size it was taken from, and silently degrades everywhere else.
The part that explains the whole mess
Here is the thing we did not expect to find.
Meta's spec pages — the ads guide, organised by placement — are public, and the numbers are in the page itself. The figures in our Reels post came out of them in a single fetch, and the safe-zone percentages are stated right there alongside the resolutions.
Meta's help centre is a different story. Its article on text overlays and the safe zone is public too — open it in a browser, signed in or not, and the whole thing is there. But the body is delivered inside a script and only appears once that script runs. Anything that reads the raw page without running JavaScript — a quick scraper, a fetch-and-summarise tool — gets the article's title and nothing else readable.
And when you do read it, it contains no numbers. It says to keep the top, bottom and sides of a 9:16 ad free of key elements, points you to the "Safe zone guardrail" toggle in Ads Manager, and adds one figure: if a Reels ad carries a disclaimer, leave the bottom 40% clear. The percentages live only in the ads guide. Neither page gives the safe zone in pixels.
That split predicts which claims survive the trip into third-party guides and which ones rot:
- Specs — resolutions, file sizes, aspect ratios — sit in plain page text, and they get copied roughly right. Wrong often enough, as the 1080 × 1920 business shows, but recognisably derived from something real.
- Guidance — where the safe zone is, how much text is too much — sits in help articles that say "keep the edges clear" without a number, on pages a quick fetch comes back empty from. These are exactly the claims that fragment into mutually contradictory folklore.
It is not that the people writing those guides are lazier about guidance than about specs. The guidance page gives them no number to copy, so they were summarising each other from the start, and with no stated figure to snap back to, the numbers drift freely and nothing ever corrects them.
What to do instead
Work in percentages. Build your templates so the safe area is expressed as a proportion of the frame, and it stays correct when the canvas changes — which it will, because it just did.
Practically, for a 9:16 ad: keep the top 14% and the bottom 35% clear of anything you need read, and stay 6% in from each edge. That bottom third is larger than most people design for, and it is the single most common reason a headline that looked fine in the export is sitting under the caption and the CTA in the feed.
If your Reels ad carries a disclaimer, Meta's help centre asks for more room still: keep the bottom 40% clear instead of 35%.
