Spark Ads

  • Updated October 31, 2026

Spark Ads are TikTok's format for running an organic TikTok post as an ad, from your own account or, with their authorization, from a creator's. The views, comments, shares, likes and follows the ad earns go to the original post. A creator authorizes a post with a video code that lasts 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.

How does TikTok define Spark Ads?

TikTok's page About Spark Ads (last updated June 2026):

Spark Ads is a native ad format that allows you to leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in your advertising. Spark Ads use posts from organic TikTok accounts to ensure that all views, comments, shares, likes, and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to your organic posts.

Its spec list says "There are no restrictions on video ratio, video resolution, file type, video duration, bitrate, and file size" and, further down, "There is a 10 minute maximum on videos that can be sparked." Plan for ten minutes. The ad's display name and text come from the post and "cannot be edited during the ad creation process," and "Each TikTok Ads Manager account can support a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads."

How is a Spark Ad different from a regular TikTok ad?

The taps lead somewhere else. TikTok's comparison table on the same page:

On a Spark Ad, viewers can also "Click the '+' sign on the profile photo to follow the account." TikTok's metrics table lists paid followers and paid profile visits under Spark Ads only.

How long does a Spark Ads code last?

7, 30, 60 or 365 days. In TikTok's steps for creators, the last choice before copying the code is to "select the authorization duration (7, 30, 60, or 365 days)", per How to create Spark Ads for Smart+ Campaigns in TikTok Ads Manager (last updated October 2025). Requests sent from Content Suite start at the top: "All Spark authorization requests are defaulted to 365 days for authorization period," per How to use Content Suite to create and launch Spark Ads.

An expired code returns error 4025 in TikTok Ads Manager ("Authorization expired."), and TikTok's fix is "Contact the creator to extend the authorization." A code that ends before the campaign fails too, with error 900010: "Authorization ends before the ad's end time." Both are on TikTok's Spark Ads code error page. Meta's partnership ads work differently: Meta gives their codes no end date, and the creator turns a code off. Meta partnership ads and TikTok Spark Ads compares the two side by side.

What it means for your ads

  • Ask for a code that outlasts your end date. A 30-day code can't carry a six-week flight.
  • Settle the caption before the code is made: "You cannot edit a post's caption after it's been authorized as an ad." A longer caption also covers more of the frame, so check the safe zone.
  • For a creator you work with often, link their account through Business Center. TikTok lists "authorized accounts (authorized through Business Center)" as an identity type beside "Posts (authorized via video codes)," and you then pick from that account's posts without a code for each.
  • Mind the AI label. Spark Ads sit outside TikTok's AI-generated content toggle; the AI avatar ads post has TikTok's rule for them.
  • For a Duet or Stitch, collect codes from both creators.

Common mistakes

  • Asking for a 90-day or never-expiring code. Neither is in TikTok's list.
  • Deleting the video while it's authorized. TikTok says "Videos need to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account."
  • Deleting a code that ads still use. "A video code can only be deleted when all the ads this video is used in are deleted in TikTok Ads Manager."
